There are very few orthodontic emergencies. Most problems can be remedied at home. Common problems that occur:
You may use acetaminophen or other non-aspirin pain relievers while you adjust to new braces. A warm wash cloth, heating pad or warm salt water may reduce soreness in your jaw.
Try moving the wire away from the irritated area with a cotton swab or eraser. If the wire will not move, try placing wax at the end of the wire, If the wire is painful, you can cut it with nail clippers or wire cutters that have been washed and sterilized with alcohol.
Do not panic. First, if the wire needs to be removed or cut, follow the instructions above. It is important to save the bracket whenever possible and bring it to the repair appointment. Then, call our office during operating hours to see if the bracket needs to be re-fitted; and make a repair appointment.
